The “0” of course referring to my tumblarity as of late. Whoops. I’m not hatin’… I’m just sayin’

In truth, I’ve been up a lot more than the current state of this blog can attest to. A few personal highlights:

1.) I took a fall roadtrip to Lancaster, PA with my right hand vintagista Sammy D of SammyDVintage. Video and photos to come

2.) I made a DIY Halloween Costume and added a bit of chic to the character Max from Where the Wild Things Are. Photos to come (hah!)

3.) I recieved the strangest delivery in the post. A mannequin. Etsy to come! Perhaps before the holidays ; )

4.) I started selling Happy Hill Vintage goods at Artists and Fleas, an indoor flea market in Brooklyn.

5.) … oh yeah… I’ve been planning a HUGE vintage-inspired bazaar here in New York City featuring my vintage designs along with Sammy’s, hand-made stationary from my college buddy Laura Trimble (LATinStudio) and hand-crafted jewelry from Kim Last Designs. New York Magazine’s The Cut, the ultimate guide on what’s haute in fashion in NYC, just picked up the event as a ‘must attend’ this weekend. More on that tomorrow…

All that to say…

31 days hiatus, 5 big developments for Happy Hill Vintage, 2 ladies still running the show, and a 0 tumblarity… time to dust of the dashboard.

WE’RE BACK!

xoxo

Remember how we were bemoaning the effects of weather on our experience at the Flea last week? Well, this morning, I decided to face the music and assess how much damage was actually done. The damage: a few of vintage leather gloves did not make it (pours one out to Mary). Note the shriveled up guy on the right. Not a haute look, at all. So. very. sad.

My mom was totally devastated when I sent her these pics, “This doesn’t make me happy. Poor gloves!” So it goes in the game of vintage. At least our sanity wasn’t the first official casualty.

File under: lessons learned.

80s barrettes are BACK! Ok so I got in it and may or may not have worked for the rest of the day in said costume.

With Halloween right around the corner, I’m starting to float around some ideas with friends. One things for certain, the costume WILL be vintage-inspired, but with a modern twist.

Current thoughts: Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Flapper (always a classic), Roller Derby chic (yeah, Whip It) or a Real Housewife of Atlanta… the theme? haute mess!

Flickr Photo Set: We just added some new fotos to our HappyHillVintage Flickr fr this past wknd at the Brooklyn Flea, Fort Greene. Torrential downpour!

FLEASPOTTED @BklynFlea: Seasonal Hats!

SOLD: every gal needs a fall headpiece!

This is the post where we learn resilience, that mixing rain and leather is a guaranteed fashion faux pas, and most importantly that a good humor (and a cold beer) is the best cure for totally crap weather…

Since we started selling our goods at the Brooklyn Flea in July, we’ve had to endure the pressure of ‘the elements.’ Earth, Wind, Water… summon Captain Planet, please! Ok so, we’re being a bit dramatic, but when you’re selling outdoors, the weather needs to be your best customer. This past Saturday started like any other (see the happy daph picture above), but around 3:00 PM, the weather took a turn for the worse and the most torrential downpour we’ve ever seen ensued. I think my ‘hunter-gatherer’ instincts kicked in high because I was on a mission to save the suede Ferragamo’s, newly acquired leather handbags, freshly clipped paper price tags, and the hats… oh the hats.

20mins in and we were totally soaked, water began to spill into the tent, and it was clear that we were not winning this battle. We had to relent. Weather: 1, HappyHillVintage: 0. The score was settled, some goods got wet and we decided to call the day a wash (literally!). Yet another lesson learned in this game of vintage, not every day is going to go well, but you suck it up and supposedly you’ll find a silver lining. I’m still looking for said silver-lining amid some ruined handbags. I’ll report back when I’ve got it.

Finally, not one to let a weekend go without our weekly *FLEA-SPOTTING* installment, we give you: seasonal hats. Continuing with our trend of “hair-pieces,” we think a solid fall hat is all the rage. Whether its wide-brimmed, fedora, or simply goes well with your outfit (see the gal above), a fashion-forward and chic hat is a must this fall. It certainly would have been a must this past weekend.

xx

Daph

PS For those of you keeping track, there is an exciting announcement in “store!” Adding the final touches…

Like what you see? Last night after a rained out flea (more on that later), I took a much needed break to hang out at Union Hall. Unbeknownst to me, the evening was costume-themed (see photo above). While I came as myself… well… others came fully decked out. This guy had the haute-ess costume - hands down!

Decked out as Björk (ca. 2001 Oscars), this handsome gent was totally working the room. The best part about it? His costume was totally DIY, from the plummage on the neck to the bedazzled beak, which was pretty fond of me.

I’ve never done a 100% DIY costume, but in light of this new vintage venture, I’m thinking that I’m going to shoot for a 100% vintage-inspired costume. Who’s with me? All that’s left to be done is to figure out what I’ll be…

Experimenting w/ a new layout at the Brooklyn Flea. I was sold by their tagline “collective fashion consciousness,” sold by the idea behind it- democratizing fashion inspiration and officially S-O-L-D by this whimsical $0.50 Chanel Bag (recessionista couture— loves it!).

I think we would all agree that we draw our fashion sensibilities from an array of sources. For me it’s vintage, it’s the Goodwill downtown, my subway ride on the L, mi madre, strangers at the Brooklyn Flea, fellow fashion bloggers like SammyD and Lizzie-Jeanne, but also by sites like these. I especially love the global nature of the looks. You start to realize that sartorial delights are pretty ubiquitous no matter where you are… All that to say… Check the site out: http://lookbook.nu/

We kid, we kid (sort of). @Lizzie_Jeanne paid us a sweet visit this past weekend at the Brooklyn Flea and scored this pretty sweet “true blue” necklace. We’re all about the ‘high/low’ school of vintage and we think that this necklace truly optimizes that. A nice dose of whimsy with the mixed materials (bead and gold chain) and a flattering layering that makes it interchangeable for day or night. Gotta get that mileage out of your pieces. We’re loving this look on ya, Liz!
